Wednesday Wisdom 02
The mental gymnastics that my brain goes through to spell Wednesday correctly remains puzzling to me, no matter how old I get. Kinda like life.
There’s no doubt I need God’s wisdom to guide me every day. But I need extra on Wednesdays.
Be kind. Please rewind!
Google will be quick to tell you more about this pic if you weren’t yet alive to experience these beauties firsthand.
But I’m guessing most of you remember the Blockbuster Video days of renting and returning a stack of VHS tapes that fueled a weekend-long movie binge.
That was typically the stickered message you’d see affixed to the front of said VHS tape to remind you to put the thing back the way you found it for the next person.
Well, we have clevered our way right on out of ever needing those dusty devices for anything again, because a movie binge is now a mere app launch away.
Confession number one. I know this realization is not exactly breaking news, but I’d be remiss to not say how happy that particular advance in modern technology makes me. I do marvel at how far we’ve come.
Confession number two. I have a cool baker’s dozen of various VHS tapes stashed somewhere in the back room downstairs.
Though most of us probably sent our VHS tape leftovers to the circular file long ago, I think there may still be a market for those stickers.
Hmm. A little adhesive reminder we could affix to our everyday lives.
Be Kind.
Pretty self-explanatory.
But in this example, what if the person I needed to be the kindest to was myself?
Please Rewind.
As in, go back. Reflect. Take a moment to remember what it felt like the last time you did that not-so-good-for-you thing.
The last time you said that, or ate that, or watched that, or (in my case last night) ignored that clock on the wall (yaaaawn), or posted that, or read that.
You get my drift.
I guess our post-VHS cassette tape life reminder sticker could just as easily be printed to say, Think before you act. Remember what happened last time and how it made you feel afterwards. Are you truly being kind to yourself? (But that’s kinda long for a sticker message and it’s not rhyme-y).
To me, self-care is more than pedicures, salt soaks and sleep story apps. Those things are all lovely. But so is having the wisdom to dodge behavior that leads to unkind results in your life.
I do like the sticker idea, but frankly, I know I need more help than a little sticker can provide.
Truth is, when left to my own devices, I have the capacity to make some pretty uncool choices. I’ve proven it a few times.
When I rewind on that, I’m reminded of how thankful I am for the grace of God, for daily second chances, and for a never-ending supply of His light to guide my path.
